‘Houdini the Musical’ - Vanished!

I have returned from my holiday refreshed and with a new skill of water skiing. I was considering putting it down on my CV but then realised as exciting as it sounds, it's probably not what casting directors are looking for, well unless they need the next Bond Girl to water ski up to the beach in her opening scene?? I can but hope.

On return to the UK my spirits were rejuvenated, I found a local agency who were happy to represent me and my singing teacher had heard about auditions for a new musical - things were looking up. Then I research the agency and discover they specialise in representing children and extras, which although not a disaster is not particularly ideal either. The musical I got an audition for is featured in The Stage this week but not for the reasons I had hoped...

ATG has pulled 'Houdini the Musical' because, although it used the incentive of a paid tour, the cast and crew would be unpaid for rehearsals and initial performances. No doubt a wise move to prevent the exploitation of generous - if not desperate - professionals, however I was really looking forward to going to the audition and oiling the slowly rusting hinges of my audition technique! If I had gotten the part I may well have worked willingly for free purely for the exposure and chance to work at the Regent Theatre, something the producers were clearly expecting.

So with my musical ambitions temporarily thwarted, I have turned to the world of screen and have applied for every student and short film going. I am quite lucky in that I live between two film production centres, one being Manchester Metropolitan University and the other Staffordshire University. Both have good reputations so hopefully I may be able to get involved and get a couple of decent scenes out of it for a show reel. I'm also attending a new writers club next week, where actors are brought in to road test new film and TV scripts by budding writers. It is a bit daunting to sight read scripts in front of the writers, but hopefully I'll get to meet some new people and brush up on my sight reading skills while I'm at it.

So as I endeavour to stay busy, I think chances of any work before Christmas are rather unlikely. Yet the joy of Christmas is also the renewed hope a new year can bring, and so I shall focus my efforts into making 2009 the year my acting career shall begin.
