Yes living it up in the capital of romance, fashion and mugging. But that is another story in itself!
I feel I haven't jotted down my thoughts for everyone to read for a good while, so here it goes. I feel as though it is a new year that I am not alone in thinking that everyone feels this is time for a fresh start, turning over a new leaf and purchasing Davina's Keep Fit DVD! I take the new year as a new opportunity to change things which I did wrong in the previous year and do things I didn't even bother with, so my New Year's resolution list is as long as the queue to go up the Eiffel Tower.
It was extremely disappointing to arrive in London this week just one day too late to catch Spamalot before it closed. Having waited (and waited, and waited) before seeing the show, it was eventually too late. My disappointment increased as I travelled on the tube escalators to be inundated by posters announcing the closure of both The Sound of Music and Avenue Q. I nearly fell down the escalator (again!) when the Avenue Q poster announced it was saying its final "furwell" (or something like that!) in March. Perhaps the British public simply have not been made aware of the hilarity that awaits them in the Noel Coward Theatre. Or perhaps too many of us were frightened by The Muppets as children.

I wonder how aware Britain has been made of Andrew Lloyd Webber's
latest Eurovision project. I was completely unaware the programme had
begun until I received messages from some Eurovision fanatics excitedly
informing me they had seen me on the show (for those who missed the
relevant blog, I drank far too much coffee before auditioning with my
best rendition of a pop song... And let's just say that pop is not my
forte!).

The week before Christmas is famously insanely busy and eventful but I didn't expect it to be in terms of acting. In fact, I was almost looking forward to a week in which I knew I wouldn't be receiving any life changing 'you got the job' phone calls (so I wouldn't need to be checking my phone constantly.) I wouldn't immediately reach for a pen to write another 'please employ me' letter the minute I woke up everyday either. I could basically give myself a break. To then get a job offer, some positive feedback from an audition I'd lost hope on and a confirmed opportunity to meet some influential people I have wanted to be seen by was very surprising and wonderful. Especially all in my week of estimated industry related rest and repose.
Six months ago I would have been mildly horrified at the idea of leaving the country, and potentially missing an audition or vital opportunity that may come my way. But there comes a point where even actors, while waiting (and waiting, and waiting...) for that vital opportunity, must remember to live their lives, and so I am thoroughly relieved to be leaving the country in January. Being in America prevents me from applying for (most) auditions while I am away, from attending any auditions and from sending out letter upon letter to industry professionals. Even if I were currently employed in an acting job, it is unlikely that any of this activity would stop. Some friends of mine were recently involved in a theatre project for several months, but throughout this period continued to send out letters, apply for auditions and, when it didn't clash with their current production, attend auditions. The simple fact of the matter seems to be that an actor never takes a holiday - well, I'm taking mine!

Three days to Christmas and my bank account is poorly. Any money I have
earned has gone on Christmas, travel expenses, Christmas, sending out
CVs, and Christmas. I haven't been to the theatre in a remarkable
amount of time considering I claim to be an actor... Hence my
delightedness at the plans unveiled for offering free theatre tickets to the under 26's from February.
For anybody with an interest in theatre, plans to offer free tickets to
various off-West End productions provides a welcome variety, whereas
those who may only usually experience high-profile West End musicals
are given a chance to experience theatre that they may otherwise have
not chosen to dish out their hard-earned rapidly-disappearing money for.

The festive spirit has well and truly taken over this week, not only
through the purchase of the Christmas tree and the ensuing decorative
mayhem, but also my first Christmas show of the season. Now I must
confess I am not a huge fan of Christmas shows, largely to do with my
general dislike of children who are invariably the audience majority.
Also the content of Christmas shows does not usually appeal to my
theatrical taste buds, with 'celebrities' as lead characters, not
because of their calibre of acting talent but how many reality TV shows
they've been on. The combination of all of these things traditionally
results in my non-attendance and a miserly 'humbug' remark whenever
adverts appear on TV or in newspaper articles.

There is no such thing as a day off for an actor. As far as my retail
job is concerned, both today and tomorrow I am having a "day off". In
actual fact, away from the retail job I am busy doing my "real" work
and have spent most of today travelling - five hours one way for a 15
minute audition and five hours back again (I am on the National Express
as I write this - hence the shorter length of this blog. I can only
write so much before the travel sickness kicks in!) Tomorrow I travel
to the other side of the country, although whether I will actually make
it to the audition is questionable. The directions I've been given are
dubious, and in the past even when armed with a map I have spent 2
hours searching an area for an audition venue which I must conclude
does not exist!

As I'm not currently performing, a couple of days in bed have had no detrimental effect on anyone else, and I can wallow in my own misery guilt free. It is quite lucky however that my body has chosen to be ill the week after I had an important audition and a jam packed charity show performance. However if I were in a show, now would be the time to either grin and bear it and let 'Dr. Footlights' do his work, or if the option were available, take the night off and let the understudy take over.
Blogging whilst in post-audition purgatory may be as risky as food
shopping whilst hungry. I can't seem to focus on anything but what the
outcome of an audition I had this week might be, despite every effort
to think about anything else. If I manage to write this entire entry
without checking my phone for the hundredth time this morning it will
be a miracle. At every stage of the game where job seeking/securing is
concerned, the waiting part is the most torturous. What is worse is
that nine times out of ten you don't hear back either way and so the
waiting is prolonged way past the bearable stage. You are invariably
left desperate; an empty shell of an actor clutching your cobweb
covered phone.

After the fantastic course I did last week with the London School of
Puppetry, I have booked myself in for another few days of puppet fun
with the school in January. With the course taking place straight
after New Year celebrations, I couldn't have picked a more inconvenient
time to travel to London. Luckily, I was armed with the following when
I made my booking: A knowledge of where to find cheap hostels (try
websites such as www.hostels.com); A 16-25 Railcard; and an Oyster card.

My first task was to find a cheap hostel I could stay in for a few
days... a difficult task since most are charging extra for my first
night's stay because it's so early on in the year. The cheapest
available was the unrepeatable experience of last week's hostel, which
I had sworn never to set foot in again. So I went a little more
upmarket and upgraded from a £5-per-night to an £8-per-night hostel!
Let's hope the experience is a little more pleasant.
Hello World!

Here we are in the month of joy, giving and good will to all men. Well, what I think they mean by 'good will to all men' is good will to everyone apart from actors! Yes, yes you guessed it - this is my first blog about moaning about the lack of jobs for us actors. Actually it is more about the lack of activity in the industry around December.

Now I don't want this to be a rant of how bad the industry is and how everything is a struggle, because for me, touch wood, it has been and will continue to be an industry with alot of opportunities which also pays nicely too. But I feel that unless you are in panto, which is great if you want to do that (but I personally am not attracted by it), it seems as if the industry kind of goes into hibernation. Maybe its just me, but my audition ratio seems to have decreased from 2-3 a week, to 1 a week, maybe 1 every 2 weeks, and I know this isn't down to my agent, because I know that they are more than capable of getting my foot in the door.

This week I had the misfortune of staying in what I must deem to be The Worst Hostel in Britain. For £5 a night in central London I had little right to complain, but for my £5 I would like to feel safer and warmer than I would on the streets of London, and preferably a little cleaner too. I must stress at this point that this was by no means my first hostel experience, nor am I fussy about cleanliness, noise, or who I share a room with… But when it’s a bring-your-own-toilet-roll affair and you are forced to escape to your ice box of a room (with mushrooms growing on the walls) in order to escape from the drug addict down the hall, I tend to begin to reconsider choosing to repeat the booking on my next visit!

Yet despite these serious causes for concern, I had a fantastic (cheap!) week in London…

Don't worry folks this is not a mix up with one of those well known
dating websites, but a musing on how one's personal life can effect
your acting career...

On my recent exploits gadding about on student films, I worked with a
couple of actors who were quite surprising. Not in their acting style
or approach to film making, but their age. I consider doing 'expenses
only' films a viable option for a recent graduate looking for
experience, or material for a showreel, especially when the location is
only 20 minutes away by train. Yet one of the actors had driven for
over three hours and was only taking part in a 5 minute film! Another
had travelled for over two hours and when I discovered she was 30, I
was more than a little surprised. Now I am in no way insinuating that
being 30 is 'over the hill' but in terms of doing 'expenses only'
films, surely there must come a point where enough is enough? I think
if I was doing an 'expenses only' film when I was 30, I would have
reconsider my career path and reassess if what I was aiming for was
actually achievable. However, by the time I'm 30, I would have been in
the business for nine years and so I think that kind of evaluation
would be justified. On the other hand I am aware that actors can
graduate at any age, or if you are trying to break into the industry
later in life, then obviously the need for experience would validate an
unpaid role.

This week I turned down an acting job. It was a tough decision I was
quite reluctant to make but if I had accepted I would have trundled
into the new year with money worries rather than high spirits and new
hope for the future of my career. The company that offered the job made
it very clear beforehand that the pay was below Equity minimum but I
felt I should audition for the production all the same, if not just for
the experience. There was also a part of me that didn't want to think
about the financial implications and hoped the money fairy might visit
me overnight...

People have said they believe my decision to have been 'brave' having
witnessed my obsessive and dedicated job hunt. Although it did take a
lot to actually say 'no thank you', I don't think courage has much to
do with it. As we are our own businesses, my decision simply saved my
business from sinking before it's even set sail. If it was a show and a
part I felt really passionate about it might have been a different,
more difficult story. I am not a fan of walking-ego-actors who only
have sights set on The National and wouldn't have even considered the
show I was offered. I will do what I can do, when I can do it and if I
don't think it detrimental. Rome wasn't built in a day and all that.
But I'm guessing you're thinking more about the random title of this blog... and so you should.
But don't worry Tony B hasn't been living it up in LA ordering ladies of the night Angus Deayton style. I just thought as last week's new look Stage was all about the joys of light entertainment, I would mix it up with concentrating on the darker side of entertainment in this joyous, caring, credit crunch fighting industry we all deeply love (said through gritted teeth).

Now I do love a bit of light entertainment, Siegfried and Roy's act never hurt anyone did it. Oh it did? Well moving on, Cannon and Ball are harmless! But I seem to be drawn to the darker side of things when it comes to entertainment, and oh how there is alot of it around! Whether it is good is the question though. What makes a dark piece of theatre, a shocking film or a tv show which challenges you in that way good?
