Warning: Potential spoilers for Season 3 of Lost. Although it’s really just speculation at this point…
If you’re watching US drama Lost in the UK on either Channel 4 or E4, you may remember Desmond, the oddball character who was found living in the hatch at the start of Season 2. The character does, apparently, make a reappearance near the end of the season, and his actions apparently have quite an effect on the islanders (I’m trying not to find out too much about that aspect — as a fan myself, it’d be nice to have some surprises come the season finale).
In a number of places, though, I’ve been noticing speculation on whether Desmond, played by Brit actor Henry Ian Cusick, would be returning for the third season. It seems to be that producers have been saying that viewers would find out what the consequences of Desmond’s actions were, but were remaining tight-lipped about Cusick’s role.
Now, it seems, we have a clue. And it may be — just may be — that The Stage has got some extra information ahead of other sources. I missed it initially, because the nugget of information was hidden in a story about change of personnel at a children’s theatre:
Polka Theatre artistic director Annie Wood has announced her resignation after four years at the children’s venue in South West London.
Wood is moving to Hawaii, where her actor husband Henry Ian Cusick is appearing in the US TV series Lost as island inhabitant Desmond.
So — if Wood, who’s done a sterling job at the Polka, is making the commitment to move to the other side of the world, does that not imply that Desmond will have a greatly increased role come Lost’s Season 3?
Mind you, if you were offered the choice of Wimbledon or Hawaii, which would you choose?

Desmond's being in next year is actually a rather big spoiler, Scott! To all appearances, Desmond (and two major characters) appear to die in an almighty explosion during the Lost finale (my spoiler-free review is over here). To reveal that Desmond's back is to reveal they're all alive in the third season. Oops!
Actually, TV Guide has already revealed this fact and others, so you're in the clear. And yes, it looks like Desmond might in fact be the most important character on the island altogether...
Rob, didn't you read how he DIDN'T want to be spoiled about Desmond's role in the finale?
For God's sake Rob, have some respect and don't spoil the man! Damn!
Hey! I didn't spoil him! Show me one thing I wrote that he didn't know already or is meaningless without context.
Desmond in final episode? Check
Desmond in next year? Check
I don't tell him what Desmond does in the finale. I don't tell him what causes the explosion - is it even an explosion, given he doesn't die? I don't tell him which two characters (which is an important point for various reasons, since others are involved earlier in the scene) were also threatened.
And what does Desmond being an important character mean? Does he run the island? Does he save everyone on the island? Did he bring everyone to the island? Did he create the magic numbers? I didn't say...
The problem is that unless you've actually seen the end of the second season, you're not actually going to know whether anything I've said is a spoiler. Once you have, you'll know I haven't been doing any spoiling at all, other than mentioning there's going to be an explosion. There was an explosion at the end of the first season too - if I'd mentioned that in advance, would it be a spoiler? In retrospect, no.
As I pointed out, Scott's post, on the other hand, is a _massive_ spoiler for those who have seen the finale as well as those who haven't.
Which isn't, incidentally, a reproach on my part, since he does preface the article with a spoiler warning.
I'm just saying he's already spoiled himself for the next season, let alone the rest of this season!
Alas, poor Scott!
Oh, I daresay I'll cope!
I think I missed the boat on Lost. Can anybody explain why it's so good, as I just don't get it. Sorry.
It's all in the mystery. Why are they there? Why are their pasts so intertwined? How come those numbers are so important? How come the island's so weird and can cure the sick?
Others may have different reasons for liking it.

Hey everyone -- official word on Season 3 is that it will start on Sky One on the night of Sunday, 19 November, with a double-bill of episodes. Main start is at 10pm, but via the red button there will be multistart options at 15-minute intervals.
Just as in America, there's a block of six episodes to see before the show takes another mini-break.
And just to whet your appetites, Sky One will be showing Lost: a Tale of Survival -- a recap of events in Seasons 1 and 2 -- on Wednesday, 15 November.
Stirling? Isn't that a place in Scotland?
Surely you mean sterling
:)
You're quite right! Noted and humbly corrected... :)
When does LOST start on CHannel 4 again in the UK???????????
"When does LOST start on CHannel 4 again in the UK???????????"
It doesn't. Sky has the exclusive rights to show it, since Channel 4 couldn't afford both Lost and Desperate Housewives.
when dose lost series 3 start on channel 4 iv been looking evrywhere
how am i gonna watch it if it aint on channel 4 i havent got sky
I got Sky just before Christmas so I didn't see the first 6 episodes of Season 3. Does this mean I am going to have to start watching Season 3 from the middle cos I don't have a chance of seeing the first half again?
is channel 4 really not going to show lost?
Channel 4 will not be showing lost at all until sky one have finished showing all 25 episodes. This is due to the fact that once sky one have finished showing season 3 it becomes cheaper for channel 4 to buy and show their viewers.
Just watched season 3 episode 7 "Not In Portland" it was on in the states yesterday. All i will say is . . . . Fantastic ! ! . . Don't wanna spoil it for anybody.
i haven't got sky either, and im desperate for lost 3 to come onto channel 4! is there a fixed date or anything? i do hope it comes onto channel 4! it has too! please tell me.. thanks!
Does anyone know when Lost started again on sky one and how many episodes there has been I'm trying to find out how many I've missed the advertising for this series was rubbish I've not missed one until now!.
